Up to 10.3 million hectares of land have been acquired by investors in the 11 countries that form the Nile River basin since 2000, most from foreign companies. This map shows data collected on large-scale land deals by the Land Matrix, an independent global land monitoring initiative, between 2000 and 2019. Click on a data point for information on the location and size of the deal, company and country ownership, year of investment, intention of the deal and whether the deal is intended or already concluded. Click on a specific country for aggregated data and charts on the major countries investing and types of acquisitions. This map corresponds with the InfoNile 2019-2020 cross-border investigation on land deals that found that foreign investors were acquiring huge swaths of land in the Nile River basin, exporting profits and displacing communities.
